Dear Friends
2008 is shaping up to be an exciting year. The upcoming national and local elections represent many opportunities for many people all over the country. For me, they represent the opportunity to let you know about the progress the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office has made—and to ask for your support in carrying that progress forward.
I am running for re-election as the Democratic candidate for the office of Second Judicial District Attorney. I anticipate opposition, but I know that with your commitment and ongoing support, I can continue working on your behalf, doing the right things for the right reasons.
When I took office in 2001, I had three primary goals:
-To raise the morale of the staff and support them to achieve their full potential;
-To increase the office’s effectiveness in prosecuting those who violate our laws; and
-To operate the office in a manner that restores the public’s faith in the integrity of the criminal justice system.
I am pleased to report we have made tremendous advancement on all fronts. I would like to share a few of our successes with you:
-We have made progress in seeing that our employees are paid competitive wages. That effort is ongoing. Providing our employees with support, training, and the opportunity to reach their full potential has been a top priority.
-We continue to pursue training opportunities throughout the country to ensure that our employees develop top skills.
-We have instituted new in-house programs, including the annual June Jubilee (a phrase coined by the late Joe Paone), an event designed to offer training opportunities to our employees and celebrate the work they do on behalf of the community.
The office has grown in the number of employees and cases we prosecute. We have also grown in our ability to be proactive, and thus more effective. Increasing safety is the bottom line in all of my office’s initiatives.
We’ve had many successes:
-Our Truancy Prevention Program—now six years old—continues to be successful, keeping more kids in school and out of trouble.
-In 2002, we created a Felony DWI Division, focusing on dangerous repeat offenders.
-We also developed the Early Plea Program to fast track certain cases, thus decreasing overloaded court dockets and holding the offender immediately accountable.
-Our innovative Mether Initiative, one of the few programs of its kind in the country, targets offenders in crimes that have a methamphetamine connection.
- We continue to pursue aggressive prosecutions and significant periods of incarceration when warranted. Prosecution is our priority.
I am honored to be your District Attorney and proud to have had the chance to make the office one of the best district attorney’s offices in the country. Among our ranks are some of the finest, most dedicated, and skilled individuals around.
I look forward to serving you another four years, with new ideas and goals to make Bernalillo County safer and healthier.
I ask for your support and for you to join us in our commitment to growth, to achievement, and to making a difference in the lives of those we serve.
Very truly yours,
Kari E. Brandenburg
Second Judicial District Attorney
